WHAT’S REFRIGERATOR SOUP?
It’s the soup or dish one creates based solely on what’s in the refrigerator and pantry. Each cover of Refrigerator Soup will feature a dish made “on the fly.” The inside cover will show a photo of the ingredients that came together for that dish.
REFRIGERATOR SOUP MAGAZINE
Welcome to Refrigerator Soup. I created this magazine to inspire and empower families to cook and eat together.
I believe in cooking at least one, if not two, meals from whole ingredients every day. Even when I’m so exhausted that the mere thought of cooking causes emotions to well up, I force myself to make my family a meal. It might be a basic grilled cheese, but it still comes from my hands.
After all, you remember the meals you ate as a child. Good or bad, those experiences stay with you. When my two children become adults, they will remember that I made the effort and perhaps even carry on the discipline.
Lest you think I have the luxury of uninterrupted time and a pantry’s worth of “gourmet” ingredients, I assure you that I juggle and struggle with the best of them. I work and I take care of my children, husband and live-in elderly mom. When it comes to cooking, I’m only half joking when I say that if I can’t make a dish with at least one child sitting on my foot, then we don’t eat it.
When I was single, I thought $25 for a bottle of olive oil was an affordable luxury. Now I just think of how many meals for four I can make with that amount of money.
My hope is that this magazine can offer practical tips and context for how to fit cooking into your busy lives. Along the way, there will be ideas for how to stretch your dollars and how to become a savvier cook who understands cooking principles and isn’t chained to a recipe. When you cook from an internalized sense of how a dish comes together, you are more fluid and efficient in your movements. That saves time in the kitchen.
